This article is about firefighters having PTSD. Firefighting is not just about putting out fires they also have to respond to motor vehicle accidents, burn victims, severely injured victims, and violent deaths. Recent study's show that firefighters have a 12.6  percent rate for PTSD. This is high compared to the overall population. What we can do to fix this is have mental health professionals and fire department staff trained to recognize signs of PTSD.

The main point of the article is spread awareness about PTSD among firefighters and how we can fix it. This is very important we need to help firefighters it is not a a easy job.

I agree with the article helping firefighters I think they are some of the most important people. Sometimes things are difficult and we need to have mental health professionals recognize these signs and to talk to the firefighters on a normal basis.

One thing I would like to add is even if we recognize signs of PTSD what would we do or who would we go to?

Honors Assignment

I think it is a great idea to have a practice emergency drill at ETHS. Usually, when something bad happens, people freak out and things get out of hand. Teaching people to handle these tough situations will ensure the safety of the school. It will also assist the first responders because they will have more help so if there are more critical injuries that need medical attention, they will be able to tend to their needs as the student go to the less critical injuries. I think teaching the students will be super beneficial also outside of school areas but if something happens in public, they will be able to assist someone until the first responders arrive.

  1. An overview of the article
    1. The job of a firefighter is not just to put out fires. They have many other jobs on top of that. They are often at incidents with mass casualties for example school shootings or mass shootings in general. They are trained for any disaster that is thrown at them.
  2. Main point of the article
    1. The main point is firefighters deal with some of the most tragic events and many things that include mass casualties not just fires. They have to keep adapting to what is happening in the world so they can train and be ready to handle the situation at hand. There is always something changing and becoming the biggest issue so they need to be able to handle anything thrown at them.
  3. Do you agree with the article
    1. I think this article is more informative so it is not something you can agree or disagree on. But I do agree that the firemen don’t have an easy job. I also agree that the firemen should be adapting and learning how to handle things because they are the first responders. They should be able to help with all situations.
  4. What can you add to the article
    1. I think it is important to emphasize everything the firefighters do. Even with those big things, they also deal with other things too as we learned from FF Mick Morel. It is not always huge things like that which makes a difference but also smaller things that make a difference as well

Article: Firefighters and Trauma
This article talks about what firefighters go through with post traumatic stress disorder. With being a firefighter being one of the most dangerous and stressful occupations in the world you can see why they go through the problems they have. Risking their lives to save others so people in situations that they can get burned alive or die from fumes get saved from these heroic people. Firefighters should be taken care of just like us citizens. Firefighters are tested all the time and learn more and more everyday about their health and their job. Firefighter are learning how to treat PTSD. they see more than fire, they see burned down homes, vehicles, humans, and animals. The main point of this article is to notify people that yes they are heros and take care of our communities but even heroes have their weaknesses. I can have an agreement on this article because a lot of people not just dont know but also don't pay attention to what they go through, most people just think of them as good guys that save lives then wait for the next call with no problem when they really are going through mental problems and need help coping with it and support. Adding to this article I would say what they should do with their job like maybe more firefighters at each station and more room for them to move around in.

Melissa Rivera Blog Post

Over the years the world has been evolving, as well as firefighters.
In fact, the term fire department doesn't tell the full story. The fire
department does more than just puts out fires, they do more medical
calls than fire calls. Many things are happening throughout the world and
it is only getting worse, shootings, bombings etc. Many firefighters and
policemen end up on the same scenes and they have begun to work together.
There are also many natural disasters such as floods and wildfires. Many
firefighters prepare for things like this so they can help their community.
The main point of the article is to talk about the things that firefighters do.
Firefighters do not only put out fires but they do anything that the community ask
from them. The article did not have different points of views, in the article,
it just stated firemen are evolving and learning new things to help their community
become a safer place. Many firemen will be called for many different things such
as medical calls, kids being stuck in rooms (happened to one of my cousins).
Overall firemen need to get more basic training so they can be ready for what's
coming to them.

I think using social media is a very effective way to communicate with the young and also adults because now of days a lot of persons have phones. Wich is a very effective way to communicate. I believe If developed an app that can be downloaded and used more people will report things that are going on at school or outside of school. It can be anonymous when reporting things. I say this because I know me and many others at high school are pretty lazy and nervous to tell somebody. If we made the app accessible to many students and or teachers and parents. Their most likely won't be a hesitation because it's really easy of doing it and it's very assessable to the public. And if it's anonymous even better it would work. That way everybody can say something comfortably. I do agree in practicing and also doing drills at school realistic drills. Why well because were to happen the students and faculty would be prepared in what to do. Practice does make better. It also I think its very important because we must be able to stay come and be able to do things smoothly in an emergency because if we don't its always a disaster and things always get worst.

Nevada Union High school student train to Assist in face of an emergency.

Some suggestion how can ETHS better utilized social media to deal with emergencies around the school or whether is straightforward. Evanston Township High school have a school code to an emergency such as an earthquake, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes and actives shooter events.with some guideline such as choose a meeting place, for example, a fire can create chaos and some student might get separated. So school must go through the rules of evacuation.with these guidelines we can save many lives.ETHS Emergency preparedness must be understandable, So training is the most important piece of the emergency prepared puzzle. ETHS must focus more on their safety budgets on training staff.

Assignment 3

I think that we should work to become more ready to handle disasters at ETHS. There is an idea that the government and the school are just going to take care of you and that you have no personal responsibility. This attitude has made it so that people are just going to take care of you. Practicing in an emergency drill will give the students of ETHS a chance to assess how ready they are to handle an emergency situation and will give them a chance to build skills that will last a lifetime. And it will add importance to one’s life if you know that you are being counted on to help your fellow man,in a time when most people are running away form a problem. And this will help build community as anyone who has done this training will have made new friends and will know that someone is willing to put their lives on the line in order to help them. This is a good program, that will help enrich the lives of those who take part in it.
My biggest question is how much training do you have to do even after you get on the force? Do you train everyday or is a monthly thing? Or just when you get new equipment or something like that?

Assignment 2
This article talks about the trauma that is facing firefighters in this modern day, it talks about how firefighters have a PTSD rate that is comparable to that of soldiers and then it gives some tips on how to help these members of first responder forces deal with their problems. The main point of the article is that firefighters are likely to have emotional problems as they are exposed to graphic unfettered images on the daily. I do agree that we should be doing something more to help our brave service men and women so that we can serve them the way they serve us. We need to make sure we back what their doing and let them know that they are appreciated by us and that we as a community will be there to help them if they should need anything. Most people who serve just want to feel like they are appreciated by people.

It talks about how many people think of firefighters on just putting a fire out. That's not the case no more now of days there are many, various different task that a firefighter does. We really don't talk about the stigma of PTSD/Mental Illness of what firefighters go through. People see them as Heroes and they are heroes. But forget that they are human and that they go through things just like we do. It is a responsibility to raise the awareness of these things to help and prevent and or help the firefighters and in reality everybody in the public service and outside of public service. Its Important to all departments and or stations to do workshops and talk about these things and not make them be hidden rather talk about. It can and most likely save a life.

The purpose of the reading is to raise awareness of the mental wellness/illness of firefighters. How firefighters, colleagues and civilian persons can spot the signs of mental illness. Even though firefighters are seen as brave and strong they also have emotions like everybody else and go through things. Therefore we should be exposed to and educated in mental illness and what to do and or where or how to get help.

I agree with the article in that we should be aware of mental illness and that we should talk about it. Why well nowadays this is very relevant to today in age. recently in the past years, we have seen more emphasis on becoming more aware and receiving more info on mental illness.

I have two things I would add to the article. One would be real firefighters talking about mental illness sort of like examples which would make more personal and emotional to the readers. Another thing would be if seeing these signs what should one do? Were to contact someone to help this individual or things to help mental illness get better or getting rid of it.

In the article ̈Firefighters and Trauma ̈ it talks about how firefighters deal with PTSD along with everyone else who deal with jobs like firefighters.
Being a Firefighter is definitely the most stressful job because day in and day out they are putting their lives in harm's way.
The PTSD population with Firefighters should be taken care of just like the way they take care of us.
Firefighters have education everyday of their entire career, so they get to learn more and more about how to treat PTSD and how they can speak up about it.
Not only do they stop fires but they also see burned people, major car crashes and that can easily have an effect on them.
The main point of this article is to stress to others outside of Firefighters that yes they are heros and they took up this job to take care of others but it’s also to inform you that even your heros have mental illness and need saving too.
I agree with the article because if you wouldn’t have read this article you would have no idea what’s going on with our heros.
It supports that Firefighters need that extra support and that they need mental support because of everything they see throughout their day.
If I could add to this article it would be that Firefighters should be able to build bigger stations and add more Firefighters to each station because having about 2-4 workers is not enough.
That way splitting jobs would be more easier and it would move the process longer.

The article showed a lot of information on Fire fighters and their battles and risks of PTSD. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or ''PTSD'' is a condition of constant mental and emotional stress due to past experiences or tragedy. And Firefighters are at high risk of PTSD without a doubt. The main point of this article is to inform it's audience on the statistics of possibilities of the disorders and it's definition, also it show's what can be done when dealing with such a problem,Te text also shows treatment plans along with it's risk factors .I do agree with the article and the facts that it is presenting and knowledge that it is spreading because before this article I didn't know much about Firefighters and PTSD. If I were to add something to the article it would be some calming agents to PTSD like dogs or swimming or maybe meditation of some sort so that the reader can be a little more educated.

After reading the articles, I realized there are many ways to contain an emergency. For example, using programs like CERT. CERT is a program where they teach emergency readiness for students. CERT was founded in Los Angeles in 1985. About 5 years ago it as implemented in the Nevada school system. One student learned how to use a book to splint a broken wrist. Nowadays this would be a perfect program to implement at ETHS. With school shootings increasing and gun violence around Chicago, this program would help kids feel safer. Also, this could help kids gain knowledge of what to do in an emergency. ETHS should implement this program for not just students, but for teachers and parents. This way the whole community could work together to make it a better place. Also, everyone would have knowledge of how to contain an injury, contain the situation, and prepare for what to do in an emergency. To make sure people participate they could give everyone extra credit for the class or a way of community service. Also, the school could send out mail to all of the parents encouraging them to come. Plus this would look great on a college application therefore, a lot of people would come. CERT isn't just a basic program it could be a program where it helps the community get together.

After reading these articles, I realized how useful social media can be in an emergency. I think there are many ways for ETHS to utilize social media and better prepare students in case an emergency were to occur. Since the school has our parents and our phone numbers, they can send our emergency alerts and updates. Say there was a fire for example. The normal fire alarms would go off while a message is being sent. Parents would be notified of what is happening and students would get directions on meeting locations and other pertinent information. Another way ETHS can utilize social media is sending out real live updates. If there was a lockdown situation no alarms could be going off but having messages appear on people's phones and having people be able to send information can benefit the school and local law enforcement.
I think practicing emergency drills would be extremely useful for students and staff at ETHS. As of now, not many people are aware of our safety measures. If an emergency were to happen and people didn't know what to do, it would create even more chaos than necessary. It is good to have students and staff well informed and well versed on our school's safety protocol in case we ever need it.

Jennifers Honors Project

“Nevada Union High school students train to assist in face of emergency”

I believe a practice emergency drill is definitely a good idea because something can happen at any moment to you or anyone around you. Whether it is someone fainting, having a heart attack, a bad cut, or a dislocated knee cap, knowing how to respond to situations like these becomes vital. With simple techniques in any of these situations can save someone's life. Practicing emergency drills can keep people calm in any intense situation and have immediate care until authorities arrive. It can also benefit students who are interested in Fire science and law enforcement since it teaches them techniques on being first respondents and how to deal with people in these types of situations. In addition to building skills it can cause assurance and create a safer school environment knowing someone in the same room as you are trained for different emergency situations.

This article was basically telling us that being a firefighter is a really stressful, hard, and dangerous job because everyday you're putting your life out there just to help the community. The main point of this article is to show that PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorders) is something that a firefighter is at high risk of getting because of they go through a lot in their job. People do a lot of studies and show that a lot of veterans get PTSD but most times they forget to do research and studies on firefighters. I do agree with this article because if you're putting your life out there on a daily and putting out fires and helping save lifes you need to be really resilient and not a lot of people can do that. And most times people forget about all this and forget that firefighters can also suffer from PTSD.

This article talks about PTSD and how easily firefighters can get it. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is something you get when you experience something traumatic and it basically haunts you forever. This article also talks about Statistics on firefighters. It shows that in 2008 the Houston fire department 12.6% of their firefighters have PTSD out of 3.036 participants. That's about 240 around people, yes the number is low but that is still a lot of people that can barely sleep at night because they cant forget about what they saw on the job.

I believe that the point of the article is just to let people know how dangerous this job can be and what this job can do to your mental health. Firefighters may seem big and strong but you should never judge a book by it's cover because behind all of that muscle could be a broken man/women that can do anything at any time.

I do agree with this article because a family member of mine is a firefighter himself. He use to tell me how people he worked with left the job because they could not handle everything that comes with the job. He didn't think himself that he would see the things that he saw. Me myself didn't think that becoming a firefighter would be as hard as it is.

If i could add anything to this article i would have a firefighter or anybody that serves the country, a city, etc come and tell the would their stories and what they experienced during their time serving and how it has effected his/her life.

The main idea of the article is that not only do army veterans go through PTSD but firefighters and most importantly everyone can. About 12.6% of firefighters have PTSD. We aren’t able to do much because of the pride and such that firefighters carry. It helps with there much stressful job but it really denies the point of communicating what happens to them which is a problem. The solution is that you should get firefighters with other firefighters so that they can deal with the stress together, it is much easier to relate to each other because they do the same thing and have the same similar background. I agree with what the article is saying because they are right about this it isn’t just vets who have this problem many people do including firefighters and what I like is that they stress that a lot in this article which is why I think it is a must to read for many people. What I could add to the article is just to stress more that the bigger picture is many people can get PTSD because of things that happen in there life, also they need to emphasize that a little more so that people can understand the bigger picture of the article. In my opinion that is the bigger picture of the article.

Kyla Guzman Assignment #1 Blog Post

The article is written by a retired Deputy Fire Chief named David Cain. In this article, Cain discusses how firefighters are doing more than just fighting fires these days. Many departments have added the word “rescue” to their name because the department is changing. Firefighters are now going to more medical calls and less and fewer structure fires are happening.  Cain talks about how firefighters are also paramedics and they are responding to medical emergencies much more. He also brings up how there have been more mass casualties that first responders are going to. Firefighters are being given more and more training for these situations that include bombings and shootings. Overall, this article was about how mass casualties and natural disasters are happening more frequently and firefighting training is changing to adapt to what’s happening in our world.
The main point of this article is to show people how firefighters aren’t just fighting fires anymore. The world has evolved and so have they. This article is displaying just how firefighters have changed. They have more medical training, mass casualty training, and much more. Many fire departments have added dive and rescue teams, hazmat teams, and even tactical teams. Firefighters are being trained on all this and even more. I think this article is showing the public how much more sophisticated firefighting has become and that there is something in the department for everyone.
This article is advocating for fire departments to have more training and to broaden their horizons. I agree with what this article is saying. In our society, we call the police and fire department to solve our life-threatening issues. I think the more training, the better. If we can make a more well-rounded department, I think it would be more beneficial for the employees as well as society as a whole. Having people who know the community learn all these different trades and skills helps the people who live here and makes more sense than calling in outside forces.
What I can add to this article is that not all departments are created equal. The training for all these new and dangerous situations is amazing and very useful. Some departments are smaller and don’t have the resources bigger departments have. The article made it seem like everyone has easy access to learning all these new training courses. Even though I agree it’s important, Not all departments can afford it.
